Overall responsibility for the operations of the municpality rests with the councillors who are elected in general elections held every four years. There are 91 positions in the council, however the number of councillors is fewer than the number of positions since some councillors represent several committees. The next general elections will be held in September 2010.
The Centre Party currently hold a majority of seats in the council, in coalition with the Conservatives, the Christian Democrates, and the Liberals. The council can be seen as the municipality´s parliament in the same way as the council´s executive committee can be seen as the municipality´s government. Representatives of the council elect the executive committee as well as a number of other committees for different operational areas.
Freedom of information
The principle of "freedom of information" applies to all municipal activities. This means that everyone - even someone wishing to remain anonymous - has a right in principle to view all municipal documents.
