Nature & culture - what to see and what to do

Ovanåkers kommun is a region with small hills and valleys, forests, and lakes. The landscape varies from deep forests to the cultivated lands near Alfta and Edsbyn. One of the main natural features of Ovanåkers kommun is the river Voxnan, which runs through the municipality from the north-west to the east. The majority of the population live in Voxnan valley.

The river Voxnan offers great opportunities for canoeing. Ovanåkers kommun also manage several cottages and wind sheds in scenic areas around the municipality. These are open and accessible to the public on a first come, first served basis.

Right of Public Access
You rely on the Right of Public Access whenever you go out in the Swedish countryside — whether it is to take a walk, go kayaking, climb a mountain or just sit down on a rock to ponder. But with the right come responsibilities; to take care of nature and wildlife and to show consideration for landowners and for other people enjoying the countryside. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency sums up the Right of Public Access in the phrase ‘Don´t disturb — Don´t destroy.´

World heritage
Ovanåkers kommun has an interesting history with a strong farming economy in the (mainly) 19th century. Due to their prosperity, the farmers built wooden mansions rich in decorations. These farm buildings are still in good shape and condition. Ovanåkers kommun, together with other neighbouring municipalities, has submitted an application to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre for the approval of farm buildings of Hälsingland to be Sweden´s next subject on the World Heritage list. UNESCO will make a confirmation in 2011.
