Nature & culture - what to see and what to do

Ovanåkers kommun is a region with small hills and valleys, forests, and lakes. The landscape varies from deep forests to the cultivated lands near Alfta and Edsbyn. One of the main natural features of Ovanåkers kommun is the river Voxnan, which runs through the municipality from the north-west to the east. The majority of the population live in Voxnan valley.
The river Voxnan offers great opportunities for canoeing. Ovanåkers kommun also manage several cottages and wind sheds in scenic areas around the municipality. These are open and accessible to the public on a first come, first served basis.
Right of Public Access
You rely on the Right of Public Access whenever you go out in the Swedish countryside — whether it is to take a walk, go kayaking, climb a mountain or just sit down on a rock to ponder. But with the right come responsibilities; to take care of nature and wildlife and to show consideration for landowners and for other people enjoying the countryside. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency sums up the Right of Public Access in the phrase ‘Don´t disturb — Don´t destroy.´

UNESCO World Heritage
An ambitious project is taking place in the Swedish province of Hälsingland to keep farms open to visitors, spread knowledge of them, and make sure that they are cared for and developed for the future.

”Hälsingegårdar” – Farmhouses of Hälsingland – is the name of this collaboration, which is run under the mottoes Know, Care, Show and Develop. The farmhouses, as the living cultural heritage, a bearer of identity, and a source of power for the future, are the focal point.

There are around one thousand old farmhouses preserved in the province, all with their own story to tell. July 1 2012 seven decorated farmhouses where inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, two of them can you find in Ovanåkers kommun.
